We receive many questions from our patients about the difference between a veneer and a crown. -Aren't these all called veneers? -Which one should I pick? -Veneers or Crowns?

The main difference is the shape. A crown covers the entire tooth, like a cap. It is also called full veneers.

A porcelain veneer just covers the front side of the tooth, it is a lot thinner, a lot smaller. It doesn’t cover the back side like a crown.

I must say that both of them can be used for cosmetic smile makeover treatments. But depending on the case, the best choice will change.

In some cases, crowns are more suitable but for some other patients, veneers will be better. Sometimes we can even use crowns and veneer on different teeth in the same case. So, how will we choose it?

Crowns:

We generally use crowns to restore the structure and strengthen the tooth that is pretty badly damaged.

If your tooth has a large filling, a root canal, or is very worn or cracked, a crown is likely the best option.

Also, we prefer crowns for smile makeovers if you grind a lot, or if your teeth are too crooked, then crowns are better to make bigger changes on the teeth positions.

If you will have a cosmetic smile work but you have some missing teeth, and if implants will not be used, then we prefer bridges to close these gaps. And bridges have to be in crown form. Veneers can't be used like bridges.

Porcelain Veneers:

Porcelain Veneers are mostly used to change the shape and the shade of the teeth permanently.

And we can do that with much less tooth reduction and tooth removal. So we can say the biggest advantage of the veneers is, they are more conservative compared to crowns. it’s usually about one millimeter in thickness.

Because of the less preparation, teeth will not become sensitive.

However, if you have heavily filled teeth and your teeth are not suitable for veneers, then you can have crowns for cosmetic smile makeover.

If you are interested in changing up your smile, improving your smile, and if your teeth are already in good condition and if you don’t have heavily damaged, crooked or missing teeth, then you can choose porcelain veneers.

If you are planning to have this treatment abroad, there are 2 more things to affect your decision...

1) Duration of treatment:

Generally crowns can be produced more quickly. So staying for a week is generally enough.

Today, With new digital technologies, staying one week is also enough for veneers but i still advise 10 days if possible.

2) Cost comparison:

Crowns also can be made from plenty of materials and it gives them a price advantage compared to veneers. The crown prices can be more affordable compared to laminate(porcelain) veneers.

Porcelain veneers have to be produced from all ceramics. This material is the most expensive but it is the golden standard for cosmetic dentistry.

You can get the best advice about choosing between a crown or a porcelain veneer from your dentist.
